If you want a pickup truck that's excellent for off-roading, choose the new Jeep Gladiator. Its round headlights, seven-slot grille, and convertible capability are similar to that of the Jeep Wrangler, but the Gladiator has a five-foot truck bed. The new Toyota Tacoma is also a capable off-roader, but it can't match the Gladiator's all-terrain proficiency. David Taylor CDJR of Mayfield has created the following comparison to show you why.
Performance
Standard Horsepower
You'll have plenty of oomph for passing on the highway in Mayfield with the new Jeep Gladiator. It comes standard with a 285-horsepower gas V6 engine, but a 260-horsepower turbodiesel V6 is available. The new Toyota Tacoma only comes with a 159-horsepower four-cylinder engine. An optional 278-horsepower V6 motor gives the Tacoma a bit more zip, but it still doesn't deliver thrilling acceleration.
Towing Capability
Mayfield drivers who often pull trailers or campers behind their truck will prefer the new Jeep Gladiator. When properly equipped, it can tow up to 7,700 pounds. The new Toyota Tacoma has a maximum towing capacity of just 6,800 pounds.
Off-Roading Ability
The new Jeep Gladiator comes standard with four-wheel drive, multiple skid plates and 10 inches of ground clearance. Some configurations have more than 11 inches of clearance to easily clear obstacles around Mayfield. Locking differentials, rock sliders, all-terrain tires, and winch-ready steel bumpers are available for even more impressive off-road talents. The Toyota Tacoma only has 9.4 inches of ground clearance. Four-wheel drive is available in the Tacoma, but it doesn't come standard, so you have to pay more to add it.
Interior
Cabin Space and Removable Top
The new Jeep Gladiator has a spacious cab with an upright dash, chunky grab handles, a removable top and doors, and a fold-down windshield. The Gladiator is one of the only convertible trucks on the market, which is ideal for open-air driving on sunny days in Mayfield. It also offers over 38 inches of backseat legroom. The new Toyota Tacoma is not available with a removable top. It only has 32.6 inches of rear legroom.
